1. Tell us about yourself and your most current project/s?
I am a Nebula and BSFA finalist author of horror, fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers. Originally from Southern Appalachia, I now live in Los Angeles. I have several recent book releases: ATACAMA; DOOMFLOWER; TO WONDER AND STARSHINE; and THE SECRET OF THE SAPPHIRE SENTINEL. Currently, I am writing a prequel for The Amethyst Lantern Series, and a sequel to my upcoming epic fantasy debut, THE VALE OF SEVEN DRAGONS. I also have an Appalachian weird horror novella out in August 2026 called GODFESTATION.
2. Where did the inspiration/idea come from this project?
ATACAMA came about as a blending of my academic life science background, science fiction, horror, and thrillers. I wanted to explore one woman’s grief against an incredibly sinister set of forces: one from corporate industry, the other otherworldly. I also wanted to juxtapose the lush atmosphere of Southern Appalachia against the stark landscape of the Atacama Desert in Chile.
3. What does the writing process look like for you?
I enjoy constructing novels like jigsaw puzzles, forming the plot as the frame, and building the interior piece by piece. Books are like movies in my head, and I just work to get them onto the page.
4. How do you handle writer’s block?
I never have writer’s block. I pivot between many creative projects: writing, art, research, etc. at all times.
5. How do you feed your creativity when feeling drained?
Rest and self-care are essential; also watching shows or movies, reading books, walking, and exploring really help me.
6. What advice would you give to writers who feel stuck or uninspired?
First off, give yourself grace. This is always my first advice. Second, take a break, allow yourself to do that. You are not in competition with anyone but yourself. And you are necessary. Next, immerse in something different from what you’re working on; try another hobby, watch shows, visit museums (even silly ones), and chat with friends and family.
7. Have you ever thought about giving up writing? If so, what pulled you back?
I’ve thought about giving up writing professionally so that I can only write for me again. But people buy my books and tell me they love my work, so...
8. How do you keep your voice or ideas fresh over time?
I listen to others’ voices. I read what is outside my lived experience. I keep an open mind.
9. What do you wish more people understood about the creative process?
As I mentioned before, we’re only truly in competition with ourselves. Put the yardstick of comparison away; it truly is the thief of joy. Work on making your own craft better.
10. What is the most honest thing you’ve ever written - and did it scare you?
Every time I write about grief, it’s honest, and it gets harder all the time. ATACAMA gave me nightmares because of how the main character, Fiona, was taken advantage of in her grief. We are so vulnerable when we are hurting.
